Right now, most of us are thinking about the holidays, but one thing you should be thinking about is home maintenance. There are four things you should do this time of year that most people don’t typically remember.
1.Your sump pump. This is a pump in your basement that helps keep water out of your house. You should check on this twice a year by pouring a bucket of water in it and making sure it drains.
2. Your refrigerator coils. There are coils on the back of your refrigerator, and you need to keep them clean to maintain the life of your unit. Use a vacuum and a coil brush, which you can find at any of the big box stores.
"Believe it or not, it’s important to change the direction of your ceiling fans throughout the year."
3. Your drains. Clear out any debris in the window wells around your house, and make sure there aren’t any leaves covering the drain in your basement.
4. Ceiling fans. You can control which direction your ceiling fans spin, and it’s important to set different directions at different times of the year. In the spring, you want the fans to go counterclockwise to pull up the cool air. In the winter, the fans should go clockwise to push the hot air down. You can see an energy savings of about 10% if you do this.
